Mentor Match Day 2021

PRSA Austin's Mentor Match Day: Thursday, October 28, 2021

Mentor Match Day (formerly Pro-Am Day) matches public relations, communications and journalism students with real-world professionals, providing students with practical exposure to communications careers, strategies and tactics in a true working environment.
This year, we're leaving it up to the professional and the student to make it virtual or in person! Students have an unparalleled opportunity to spend one hour with a local professional for a resume review, LinkedIn profile review, or a "Day in the Life" Q&A. Experiences can be customized based on the student's needs and the professional's preferences.

Students - Complete this questionnaire below to secure your spot for 2021 Mentor Match Day!

What is the registration deadline?

Why should I participate in Mentor Match Day?
Networking is the lifeblood of our industry. Participation will help you make connections with peers and professionals that will benefit your career search. It will also provide you with practical information that will elevate your personal brand and position you for entry-level jobs upon graduation.

Since this is virtual, can I participate on a different date if I can't make it on Oct. 28?
Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to schedule individual sessions on different dates. However, if you learn after registration that you cannot participate on Oct. 28 and have already connected with your assigned professional, you may work individually with that professional to try and reschedule the one-on-one session.

Will this lead to a job opportunity?
This program is intended to be a career discovery and networking opportunity, not a job interview. We cannot guarantee that participating professionals will have job or intern opportunities available, but if they do you may certainly increase your chances of being considered!

Is this program limited to PRSSA Members?
PRSA Austin welcomes all students who are pursuing degrees or considering careers in public relations, marketing, digital marketing, communications, journalism and other related fields. It is not limited to PRSSA members.

Will I be matched with someone from my preferred organization/field?
PRSA Austin will make every effort to match students with professionals from the types of organizations or specific fields in which they are most interested. However, we are limited to matching students with the professionals who sign up and cannot guarantee all preference requests will be granted. We do guarantee that no matter who you're matched with you will gain insight that will help guide your career path!

When will I know which professional I've been matched with?
PRSA Austin will notify students and students of their matches no later than Monday, October 25, 2021.

What should I do once I've been matched with a professional?
PRSA Austin will share the name and contact information for the professional you've been matched with, along with suggested next steps. In general, go ahead and reach out to your professional to determine how they want to connect and to discuss what kind of information you hope to gain during your session.

Will PRSA Austin provide Zoom links for all of the Mentor Match Day sessions?
PRSA Austin will provide Zoom links for the networking session and the program. These links will be shared in your confirmation email. It will be up to you and your assigned professional to determine what platform to use for your one-on-one session and to exchange that link.

Who do I contact if I need to cancel at the last minute?
Please email us at [email protected] if you need to cancel your involvement in Mentor Match Day. If you have already been assigned to a professional, please also reach out to that mentor.

Still have questions? Please contact [email protected].

PRSA Austin Mentor Match Day FAQs

How do I sign up to mentor a student for Mentor Match Day?
Fill out the pro questionnaire. The registration deadline is Oct. 21, 2021.

Why be a Mentor Match Day Mentor?
PRSA Austin's Mentor Match Day offers a unique opportunity to impact the future generation of PR professionals! Your dedicated time will help prepare students for their career path and to achieve their professional goals. It is a great opportunity to give students an outside perspective from one of many experienced public relations professionals in Austin. You would be sharing your knowledge, skills and expertise with a mentee, providing them with a fresh perspective on their profession.

What is my time commitment to be a Mentor Match Day mentor?
We are asking 1-3 hours of our time on Oct. 28. We only ask that you commit to the one-hour one-on-one student session. Other than that, it's up to you to participate in the networking sessions and program.

When will I know which student I've been matched with?
PRSA Austin will notify professionals and students of their matches no later than Monday, October 25, 2021.

What should I do once I've been matched with a student?
PRSA Austin will share the name and contact information for the student you've been matched with, along with suggested next steps. We are encouraging students to reach out to their assigned professionals to make arrangements for the one-on-one sessions, but if you have not heard from your student by Oct. 27 feel free to contact them.

Will PRSA Austin provide Zoom links for all of the Pro-Am Day sessions?
PRSA Austin will provide Zoom links for the networking session and the program. These links will be shared in your confirmation email. It will be up to you and your assigned student to determine what platform to use for your one-on-one session and to exchange that link.

Can I use Pro-Am Day to vet interns?
Looking for interns? This is also the perfect opportunity to meet ambitious students who will soon be entering the workforce. Don’t miss out on this excellent platform to share your work and influence the future of our profession.

I'm an entry-level professional. Can I still be a mentor?
Absolutely! Entry level professionals are in a great position to share more recent experiences and information about their job search and what students can expect during their first years in the industry.

I'm not comfortable giving students advice on the resumes. Is that a requirement?
One-on-one sessions with students are customizable based on the preferences of the student and the professional. If you don't want to do a resume review, you can make arrangements with your student to cover information that will still be useful to them.

Who do I contact if I need to cancel at the last minute?
We understand that in our profession unexpected things come up. If you need to cancel, please contact us at [email protected] so that we can make arrangements to match the student with another professional. If you have already been assigned to a student, please also reach out to that student. We encourage you to try and arrange a separate time to talk with that student if your schedule allows.

Still have questions? Please contact our Membership Chair Morgan Lawrence at [email protected] or PRSA Austin Chapter President Ashley Schlosser at [email protected].
