MEET PRSA AUSTIN CHAPTER MEMBER: Alexandria Bruton

CURRENT LIVELIHOOD: I’m currently a Public Information Specialist for the City of Austin. Specifically, I work with Austin Resource Recovery, the City’s recycling, yard trimmings and trash collection department. A big part of my job is getting out into the community and promoting the City’s Zero Waste goal and green initiatives.

CHILDHOOD AMBITION: Growing up I wanted to be a writer or a theatre director. I would pay my parents a dime (to split between them) and make them act in elaborate little plays that I wrote.

DRAW TO THE COMMUNICATIONS FIELDI was lucky to have great teachers who encouraged me to pursue communications. I always knew that it was something I was interested in but I had no idea what a career in the communications industry would look like.

ALMA MATER: Texas Christian University. Go frogs!

HOMETOWN: I grew up and went college in Fort Worth, Texas. I moved to Austin a year and a half ago.

MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS A COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONAL: I had the opportunity to participate in a symposium with Bob Schieffer, Ann Curry and Maureen Dowd. Talking one-on-one with communications professionals at the top of their field was so inspiring! I’m still early into my career so I’m looking forward to many more.

RECOMMENDED READS: I’m not an introvert but I recommend the book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking" by Susan Cain. As someone who talks a lot for a living, it really opened my eyes to the value in more subtle methods of communication.

FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT AUSTIN AND FAVORITE AUSTIN RESTAURANTS: I love shopping at all the vintage stores around town. My favorite restaurants are Contigo, VIA 313 Pizza and First Chinese BBQ.
